CHAPTER FOURTEEN

After a literal night of champagne and caviar, more fun hanging out with her cousin than they’d had in a long time thanks to videogames, and eating every speck of food, Halsey was surprised at how good she felt when she crawled into the king-sized bed in her own private bedroom of the penthouse suite. She’d managed to table her concerns and frustrations about the unkillable chimera for the night, so she didn’t have any trouble slipping off to sleep minutes after she’d pulled the comforter up over her head.

Staying asleep was a different story.

She had no idea what time it was when a low, humming buzz and intermittent flashes of strobing light roused her from a deep sleep. The silence and almost complete darkness of the penthouse had made it easy to get comfy and sleepy, but the sound and the light were impossible to ignore.

The buzzing only seemed to grow louder as the flashes of light moved back and forth across her closed eyelids.

Halsey growled and tossed the comforter off before slapping a hand onto the nightstand. There was her phone, cold and solid against her palm, and she stabbed it to get rid of whatever ludicrous alarm she’d apparently set during her fun night with Brigham.

But it wasn’t her alarm because the buzzing wouldn’t shut up, and the lights kept blinding her from a direction that wasn’t her phone.

“Seriously?”

She slapped her phone down, then pushed herself up so she could get to that damn noise.

Another brilliant flash of light crossed her eyes. She clenched them shut and flinched away as she raised an arm to shield herself. The buzzing continued, and the next time the flashing light passed over her, she blocked it enough with her open hand to see what it was.

The light was a deep crimson, dark enough to make her think of blood yet bright enough to rouse her from one of the best nights of sleep she’d had in a while.

The disturbance seemed to be coming from the middle of the bedroom. She only figured out that much because after the last pass of the light failed to blind her, she watched the beam of crimson circle the perimeter of her room like a laser scanner.

I swear, if Brigham added some useless, stupidly expensive security system that’s gonna wake me up like this every night…

Once she shook herself awake enough to stand without falling, Halsey shuffled across the enormous bedroom toward the door. She felt the wall for the light switch and angrily clicked it on.

The brightness that flooded her room from the overhead lights wasn’t nearly as bright as the mystery laser beam, but it was constant and glaring. The back of her eyes hurt before they adjusted to the new glare. As her vision focused and she made out the source of the crimson light and the buzzing, she almost wished she’d kept the light off.

The copper orb hovered in the air like it had a month ago in her grandmother’s living room.
